How to Become an Interior Designer in Oklahoma
The inside of your favorite place may have been inspired by a vehicle, landscape or other source you may not expect. A successful interior designer will be innovative and capable of drawing inspiration from almost anywhere. This is part of how interior designers tap into their creativity to design spaces that intrigue and attract people. For example, if a corporate building is being designed with employees in mind, a skilled interior designer would include lots of windows and open spaces for community and team-building.
Understanding building codes and laws, human behavior and universal accessibility standards are all included in the responsibilities of an interior designer.
Requirements for Becoming an Interior Designer in Oklahoma
While several states have decided to enact laws in governance of interior design, some states have regulations in place only for interior designers who want to use a certain title. In Oklahoma, if you wish to refer to yourself as a “registered interior designer, you will first need to register with the Oklahoma Board of Architects (OBA). The OBA requires that applicants complete an interior design education program accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), though the OBA is also willing to accept certain education programs which are not CIDA-accredited. Applicants must also have at least two years of professional experience within the trade. Additionally, it is required that all registrants complete the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam before registering with the state.
To register with the state, you will first need to submit an application along with a fee of $100. After your application receives approval, you will need to submit a $325 registration fee. Once you have been registered with the state, every two years you will be responsible for providing proof that you’ve completed at least 24 hours of continuing education.
